OMERS' $20M investment in Hootsuite now values the company in the $200M range, experts say. But its not the new corporate credibility that this investment brings to this very fast growing company that makes this unique, but the way in which this investment was made. Like Groupon and Zynga before it, the investment was made not by buying shares in Hootsuite, but in a secondary transaction that purchased shares from a handful of employees and early investors, according to chief executive Ryan Holmes. Ryan feels that the transaction aligns investor and employee goals, saying it would help avert the need to sell his company prematurely simply to cash out.
I could not agree more as we have seen many Canadian companies (like DEES Communications that I was involed in) being bought by international interests who eventually close down Canadian operations. Let's keep Canadian companies here and growing in Canada!
